Established July 1 1990 the Texas Houston East Mission stands as a testament to faith. It’s a vital part of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints’ presence in Houston. This mission represents a significant chapter in the Church’s history in Texas. It’s a story of growth perseverance and community.
The Texas Houston Mission originally formed July 1 1976. It was the third mission in Texas the 142nd overall. This sprawling mission covered vast areas. It extended eastward and southward even into Louisiana. The Texas Houston East Mission was born from a split of the original mission. It took over the eastern and southern territories.
Imagine the challenges faced by early missionaries. They traveled across the state spreading the gospel. They baptized converts many of whom eventually migrated to Utah. The Civil War interrupted missionary work but it resumed afterward. By the late 19th and early 20th centuries small pockets of Latter-day Saints emerged across East and South Texas. Houston saw its first Latter-day Saint baptisms in June 1897.
The Great Depression presented further obstacles. Fewer missionaries were sent to Texas but the First Presidency authorized local Texans to serve short-term missions. This ensured continued growth. World War II spurred economic growth in Houston leading to an influx of Latter-day Saints from across the country. This brought further experience and expertise to the Houston area. In 1933 a donation enabled the construction of a chapel followed by a larger one in 1940.
By 1953 the Houston Stake formed encompassing 3800 members. This spread across 15 local congregations in 48 counties. Fifty years later the one stake grew into 22 stakes and five missions. Church membership in Houston skyrocketed to 40000. The Houston Temple dedicated on August 28 2000 serves as a beacon of faith. It stands as a testament to the dedication and perseverance of its members. The Texas Houston East Mission continues to thrive. It plays a vital role in the spiritual landscape of Houston and beyond. It’s a community built on faith service and dedication.
