Right here before us stands a testament to the enduring faith that has taken root in Houston. This building The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints represents more than just a place of worship. It’s a living history lesson.
The story of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Houston began long before this building was even a gleam in someone’s eye. It actually started before Texas even became a state. In 1844 Joseph Smith the founder of the church sought land in Texas. He wanted to establish a large settlement for his followers. This proposal known as the Texas Plan aimed for a mass relocation to Houston. Unfortunately Joseph Smith’s death before finalizing the deal prevented this grand plan from coming to fruition. The church instead focused on completing its temple in Nauvoo Illinois.
It was much later around 1918 that Latter-day Saints had another connection to Houston. Instead of a mass migration from Utah as occurred in earlier years this time it was converts from Mississippi and Alabama who moved to Houston. They had converted to the faith and relocated for work opportunities. Missionaries actively spread the gospel in these states as well as Texas bringing new members into the fold.
Early growth in Houston was slow. The church faced challenges. It was a small scattered community. Yet economic factors played a role. The Great Depression led to fewer missionaries being sent. However local Texans were called for shorter missionary terms. This ensured continued growth and strengthened the church’s community ties. The construction of an Air Force base near Houston along with the rise of the petroleum industry brought more Latter-day Saints from across the country. By 1931 Houston had around 2600 members a significant increase. A generous donation in 1933 enabled the construction of the first chapel on Calumet Street. A larger chapel followed in 1940.
The Houston Texas Temple a magnificent structure opened on August 28 2000. It stands as a symbol of unwavering faith. The temple itself has its own intriguing story. The land was initially unavailable. The owner a developer had faced financial hardship. He made a promise to God vowing to repay Him if he was spared from ruin. When the opportunity to sell the land to the church arose he saw it as a way to fulfill that promise.
The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Houston has blossomed from a small group of faithful pioneers to a thriving community. It represents the unwavering spirit of faith resilience and growth. Today it continues to serve thousands. It’s a remarkable journey of faith from those early days to the impressive temple we see today.
