Ever wondered how a sailmaker helped establish a church here? The story of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Kolkata is one of faith perseverance and a little bit of serendipity.

This church’s journey began in 1851. Joseph Richards a sailmaker arrived in Kolkata as a missionary. He baptized locals and started a branch. A small chapel was built on Jaun Bazar Street. It was the first building of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Asia.

However early missions faced challenges. By 1869 the branch was disbanded. But the flame of faith wasn’t extinguished.

Fast forward to 1993. A mission was created in Bengaluru. Missionaries were sent to Kolkata. In 1994 a branch was reestablished. Today this congregation is the only one of its kind in eastern and north-eastern India.

In 2019 the Kolkata Branch celebrated its 25th anniversary. Church leaders and members shared inspiring messages through music dance and literature. Bradley R Hansen the New Delhi Mission President noted the beautiful blend of Christian beliefs and Bengali culture.

Interestingly the church experienced a period of limited growth. Many converts emigrated. Keeping branches going proved difficult. Yet the church never forgot India. In 1921 David O McKay became the first general authority to visit.

One notable event involves Michael Anthoney. A young student sponsored by a family in Utah. The Pond family sent him magazines and pamphlets about Joseph Smith. Anthoney felt a strong connection. When missionaries arrived in 1981 he was baptized. He later served a mission himself.

In 1982 The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints was officially recognized by the Indian government. The Book of Mormon was translated into Hindi. By 2003 membership had grown to over 4000.

Today The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Kolkata continues to thrive. It stands as a testament to the enduring spirit of its members. It showcases their dedication to faith and community. A new temple in Bengaluru was announced. It symbolizes the hastening of the work in India. This is a beacon of hope for the future.
