How many first baptisms in Scotland took place in the River Clyde? The answer lies right here, before The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Glasgow. This unassuming building holds a significant piece of Latter-day Saint history. The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints’s story in Scotland began not in Glasgow, but with a ripple in the River Clyde near Bishopton in 1840. Two Scottish converts, Alexander Wright and Samuel Mulliner, returned from Canada to share their newfound faith. Mulliner baptized the first converts in Scotland, Alexander and Jessie Hay, marking the church’s humble beginnings.

The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints’s presence soon spread to Glasgow. In June 1840, missionary Reuben Hedlock arrived and began preaching, eventually establishing a branch with twelve members. The church’s growth in Scotland, however, wasn’t without its challenges. Early members faced persecution and economic hardship. Many emigrated to Utah, following the call to gather with the Saints in America. By 1890, only about 200 members remained in Scotland.

Despite these difficulties, The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Scotland persevered. The faith of those who remained laid the groundwork for future growth. The mid-20th century witnessed a resurgence. The first Church-owned meetinghouse was dedicated in Glasgow in 1952. The first stake was organized in 1962. By 1980, the church had established a strong presence throughout Scotland with all members belonging to a stake.

Today, The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Glasgow stands as a testament to the resilience and dedication of its members. It represents a rich history interwoven with emigration, persecution, and ultimately, growth. From a small gathering by the River Clyde to a thriving community, The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints has become an integral part of Scotland’s religious landscape. Though it hasn’t always been easy, the church continues to serve as a beacon of faith for thousands.
