“A settlement of Saints” might sound like the beginning of a fairy tale. But it’s actually the beginning of the story of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Colorado. The story began in 1846. A group of 61 converts from Mississippi arrived near present-day Pueblo. They sought a place to spend the winter.

The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Colorado has a rich history. It started with those early settlers. They were later joined by members of the Mormon Battalion. This temporary colony became the first branch of the Church in Colorado. It’s also considered the first Anglo settlement in the state.

Sarah Emma Kartchner was the first Anglo child born in Colorado. She was born in this settlement. By the fall of 1848 all members had left the Pueblo settlement.

The first official mission opened in Colorado in 1896. John W Taylor was the president. The first congregation was organized in January 1897. The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints grew. By 2022 it had 148708 members in 310 congregations.

The first church building was built in 1904. It served as both a mission home and a chapel. It stood at Galapago St and 6th Ave. The mission’s name changed over the years. It was once the Western States Mission. Later it was the Colorado Mission.

Today the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints is the second-largest denomination in Colorado. This is after the Roman Catholic Church. Colorado has the 10th most members of the Church in the United States.

The Denver Colorado Temple was completed in 1986. It was a significant milestone. The Fort Collins Colorado Temple followed. It was dedicated in 2016. Grand Junction will have a temple soon. Another temple is planned for Colorado Springs.

The Church has a strong presence throughout Colorado. There are many stakes and missions. The Church plays an important role in local communities. Members are actively involved in service.

Today The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Colorado continues to grow. It builds on the legacy of those early pioneers. Their faith and dedication shaped the Church’s history in this state. The Church continues to be a place of community. It is a place of faith for many.
