This grand structure, The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Port of Spain, is not just a place of worship but a beacon of hope for the community since the 1980s. Imagine a small congregation meeting in a humble space, eager to learn and grow in their newly discovered faith. Liz Dopson, a Trinidadian woman with a passion for the church, wrote a letter way back in the 1970s to the church president requesting that full-time missionaries be allowed to spread their message in Trinidad. In Trinidad and Tobago, things can be very different from what you’re used to, so it took quite some time for the government to say yes, allowing the church to put down roots. It wasn’t until 1980 that the first congregation was officially established in Port of Spain under the umbrella of the Venezuela Caracas Mission. Over the years, this church has flourished, playing a vital role in forging connections within the community. It might surprise you to learn that in 1991 it became its own mission—the Trinidad Tobago Mission—and today it houses one of the most important Family History Centers in the region.
