The restored gospel first arrived in Australia in 1840. William Barratt a 17-year-old British convert introduced it. He had been ordained to preach just before his family moved to Australia. Other missionaries and members followed. They formed the first branch in 1844 and a mission in 1851. Many early members left to build up the kingdom of God in Utah.

In the early 1900s The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints began to grow steadily in Australia. The first Church-owned meetinghouse was dedicated in 1904. After World War I the Church assured the government that missionaries would not encourage emigration. Permission was granted to send more missionaries.

After World War II members participated in a chapel construction program. Stakes were organized in Sydney Brisbane and Melbourne in 1960. These were among the first stakes outside North America.

The Brisbane Australia Temple was announced on July 20 1998. Gordon B Hinckley announced it. Kenneth Johnson broke ground on May 26 2001. Gordon B Hinckley dedicated it on June 15 2003. The temple is 10700 sq ft on a 0.86-acre site. Its design is classic modern with a single spire. Phillips Smith Conwell designed it.

In 1984 the first temple in Australia was dedicated in Sydney. Members focused on family history. They preserved immigrant and Aboriginal Australian histories. By 2003 there were temples in Adelaide Melbourne Perth and Brisbane. By 2016 there were about 150000 members in 40 stakes.

The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Australia has a rich history. It began with a young missionary and grew into a thriving faith community. As of 2023 total Church membership in Australia is 157079. There are 41 stakes and 306 congregations. The Church also has 143 FamilySearch Centers and 5 missions.

It also shows the ongoing commitment of its members to serving God and their community. In April 2024 Russell M Nelson announced a new temple in Brisbane.
