Why are those tortoises carrying such a heavy burden? We are standing before The Celestial Sphere, a masterpiece created by the American sculptor Paul Manship. It’s a symbol of peace and international cooperation, but its journey here was anything but peaceful. Imagine, it arrived in Geneva in August 1939, just as the world was on the brink of World War II. This grand sculpture, meant to celebrate peace, was unveiled as conflict engulfed the globe. The Celestial Sphere, over four meters in diameter, depicts 85 constellations and over 800 silvered stars, all gilded with astronomical precision. Notice how Manship cleverly hid his self-portrait among the constellations, a whimsical touch from the artist. Originally, the sphere rotated slowly, mimicking the Earth’s movement, but the mechanism sadly fell into disrepair. The weight of the sphere, a hefty 5,800 kilograms, rests upon the backs of four bronze tortoises. These tortoises symbolize immortality and are a reminder of the enduring hope for peace that this sculpture represents, even in the face of global turmoil.
