A hush falls. Before you stands The Caller a bronze figure frozen mid-cry.

This is Der Rufer The Caller. Created by Gerhard Marcks in 1966 this three-meter-tall bronze statue arrived in Berlin just months before the Berlin Wall fell. It stands near the Brandenburg Gate a poignant symbol of hope and peace.

The original Der Rufer was commissioned in 1967 for a telecommunications building in Bremen. This particular cast however has a special significance. A private foundation purchased it. They wanted to place it on Strasse des 17 Juni in West Berlin. Imagine its placement. It deliberately faced East Berlin. A silent call across the divide.

Inscribed on its base is a quote from Francesco Petrarch. It reads I wander through the world and cry Peace peace peace. A simple yet powerful message of unity and reconciliation. A message particularly resonant in this location. In this city scarred by division.

Interestingly though the meaning of The Caller is not fixed. While Berlin sees a call for peace. The statue in Perth Australia is dedicated to victims of torture. Marcks himself never imposed a specific interpretation. He left the meaning open. A testament to the power of art to transcend. To speak to different hearts. To inspire different reflections.

The Caller’s presence is not only a visual reminder. It also serves as a powerful historical marker. A symbol of hope that emerged from the ashes of division. A beacon of peace that still resonates today. Take a moment to absorb this powerful image. Let its silent cry echo in your heart. Let it inspire a peaceful reflection. Let’s continue our journey.
