Picture this a group of determined men paddling canoes. They are part of the Cadillac Convoy. Their journey is long and arduous. Their destination is a place that will become a great city Detroit.

The Cadillac Convoy wasn’t just a random expedition. It was a pivotal moment in history. In 1701 Antoine de la Mothe Cadillac led this group. They established the first permanent French settlement in Detroit. This brave band of explorers soldiers and missionaries numbered around 100. Their purpose was to claim land for France and establish a strategic foothold in North America.

Imagine the challenges they faced. They traveled along the Ottawa River Lake Nipissing French River Georgian Bay Lake Huron the St Clair River Lake St Clair and finally the Detroit River. The journey took months. It required incredible resilience. They navigated treacherous waterways. They faced the dangers of the wilderness.

The Convoy finally reached Grosse Ile. They camped there before selecting the site for Detroit. The choice wasn’t arbitrary. They chose a bluff on the northern shore. From this vantage point they could control the river.

Cadillac claimed the land for France. A fort was built. It was named Fort Pontchartrain du Detroit. The first Ste Anne’s Church was also constructed. Land grants followed starting in 1707.

But Cadillac’s legacy is complex. He was criticized for his actions at Fort Michilimackinac. He was accused of selling alcohol to Native Americans. He was also accused of unfair treatment of fur traders. His reports of a prosperous settlement were disputed. A 1708 report indicated only 62 French citizens lived outside the fort’s garrison. Cadillac was apparently disliked for abusing his power.

Despite the controversies the Cadillac Convoy’s arrival marks a significant event. It is the founding of Detroit. The plaque in Hart Plaza commemorates the 300th anniversary of this event. It lists the names of the men who made the arduous journey. It stands as a tribute to their courage perseverance and expertise. These men shaped the future of Detroit. Their legacy continues to resonate today.

This is more than just a historical event. It is a testament to human ambition. It is a story of exploration. It is a story of perseverance. It is a story of the very beginnings of Detroit. And it’s a story that continues to captivate us centuries later.
