The Cadillac Convoy wasn’t just a random expedition. It was a pivotal moment in history. In 1701 Antoine de la Mothe Cadillac led this group. They established the first permanent French settlement in Detroit. This brave band of explorers soldiers and missionaries numbered around 100. Their purpose was to claim land for France and establish a strategic foothold in North America.

He was also accused of unfair treatment of fur traders. His reports of a prosperous settlement were disputed. A 1708 report indicated only 62 French citizens lived outside the fort’s garrison. Cadillac was apparently disliked for abusing his power.
Despite the controversies the Cadillac Convoy’s arrival marks a significant event. It is the founding of Detroit. The plaque in Hart Plaza commemorates the 300th anniversary of this event. It lists the names of the men who made the arduous journey. It stands as a tribute to their courage perseverance and expertise. These men shaped the future of Detroit.
