Established in 1875 The Buchan School initially served as a school for girls. It was then known as The High School for Girls. Lady Laura Buchan founded the school. She was the daughter of Colonel Mark Wilks. The school’s first location was on Douglas Road in Castletown. It was situated on the promenade. The school quickly outgrew its original site. A move to a new location named Westhill became necessary. Westhill was about a mile from the original location.
As the number of pupils increased space became a major issue. The senior department age eleven to eighteen was relocated. It was housed in three adjacent terraced houses. These houses had once belonged to Lady Laura Buchan. The junior school and boarding accommodation remained at Westhill. Pupils walked across Castletown to use the playing fields. They also walked to King William’s College for swimming lessons.
In 1991 The Buchan School amalgamated with King William’s College. The school became a co-educational preparatory school. This was a significant change. By 2005 the school had about 250 pupils. The Buchan School holds the distinction of being the Isle of Man’s only independent primary school.
The Buchan School boasts four houses. Each pupil belongs to one house. The houses compete in awards and sporting events. Their names are Magnus Olaf Lagman and Godred. They are represented by green red blue and yellow respectively. Two additional houses Ivar and Somerled existed in the 1970s. These were for boarders. They were represented by gold and purple. Boarding facilities ceased in 1999. These houses were then discontinued.
The school has its own award system. This is the Buchan Badge. It’s awarded to pupils in years three to six. The award is based on the Duke of Edinburgh Award Scheme. Pupils must complete sections on physical activity country craft or field craft and service. The school motto is Fortior Qui Melior meaning The Braver The Better. Notable alumni include Jennifer Kewley Draskau. She’s a historian linguist teacher and political candidate. The Buchan School continues to thrive. It provides a unique and valuable educational experience on the Isle of Man.
