A grand opera department? Here at The Boston Conservatory at Berklee? Indeed! The Boston Conservatory at Berklee, nestled in Boston’s vibrant Fenway neighborhood, holds a legacy far grander than many realize. The Conservatory wasn’t always part of Berklee. Founded on February 11, 1867, by Julius Eichberg, it began as a community music school, a beacon of opportunity for aspiring artists of all backgrounds. The Boston Conservatory at Berklee was a pioneer, opening its doors to African Americans and women at a time when such inclusivity was rare.
The Boston Conservatory at Berklee grew, adding dance, opera, and theater to its prestigious programs. It blossomed into a renowned institution, shaping generations of performers. In the early 20th century, the school faced challenges. Enrollment dipped and finances dwindled. But a revival was on the horizon. Agide Jacchia, conductor of the Boston Pops, stepped in. He brought new energy and vision. He expanded the programs. A grand opera department, the first in the U.S., was established. He recruited faculty from the Boston Pops and the Boston Symphony Orchestra.
In 1943, another milestone. Jan Veen established the Dance Division. This innovative program emphasized both classical ballet and the burgeoning American modern dance. The Boston Conservatory at Berklee continued to flourish, becoming a vital force in the performing arts world. Presenting over 700 performances annually, it showcased the talent and dedication of its students and faculty. In 2016, a new chapter began. The Boston Conservatory at Berklee merged with the renowned Berklee College of Music. This union created a powerhouse of musical and artistic education. Under the umbrella of “Berklee,” The Boston Conservatory at Berklee retains its distinct identity. It continues to offer its specialized conservatory programs, enriched by the resources and collaborations of the larger institution. The Boston Conservatory at Berklee stands as a testament to the enduring power of the arts. It is a place where creativity thrives, where tradition meets innovation, and where dreams take center stage.
