On a seemingly ordinary day in January 1923, fifteen young women approached A. Frank Smith, pastor of First Methodist Church. This marked the humble beginning of The Blue Bird Circle. Their goal was simple: to form a local organization dedicated to serving their community. The Blue Bird Circle Plaque stands as a testament to their vision and the incredible impact they’ve had on Houston. The plaque, located on West Alabama Street, details the organization’s history and dedication to children’s needs. Initially, they focused on local projects. They established a young women’s cooperative home and a day nursery. They even created a “Little Hospital” for children with disabilities. In 1949, The Blue Bird Circle took a monumental step, founding a clinic for children with cerebral disorders. This small clinic eventually blossomed into the renowned Blue Bird Circle Clinic for Pediatric Neurology. The Blue Bird Circle’s commitment didn’t stop there. They continue to support the clinic. They fund critical pediatric research at the Developmental Neurogenetics Laboratory and the Rett Center at Baylor College of Medicine. Their resale shop, opened in 1959, isn’t just a unique shopping experience. It’s a vital source of funding for their ongoing mission. From humble beginnings with just fifteen members, The Blue Bird Circle has grown into a powerful force for good in Houston. Their unwavering dedication to children has left an undeniable mark on the city, a legacy beautifully captured by this plaque.
