Gazing up at this unassuming structure, could you ever guess its tumultuous past? This, my friends, is the Black Pagoda. It stands as a testament to Kolkata’s rich and layered history. The Black Pagoda, a Kali temple, was once the tallest structure in 18th-century Calcutta. Commissioned by Gobindaram Mitra, a wealthy salt merchant and the second “Black Zamindar,” it was completed around 1731. Its tallest turret originally soared to about 165 feet, dwarfing even the Shahid Minar. Imagine ships sailing into Calcutta, using this imposing temple as their navigational landmark. Its dark brick exterior earned it the nickname “Black Pagoda” in shipping logs and English literature. Sadly, the Black Pagoda’s reign as the city’s tallest structure was short-lived. Just a few years later, in 1737, a devastating earthquake and cyclone struck on the same day. The temple, possibly due to structural weaknesses, suffered significant damage, and its highest spire crumbled. The spire was never rebuilt. The Black Pagoda, though damaged, miraculously survived and continued to function. It stands here today, having undergone renovations and a facelift. Some of its older spires have been replaced with newer, triangular ones. While it no longer dominates the skyline, its story remains. It’s a story of resilience and a reminder of Kolkata’s ever-changing landscape.
