Gazing up at this grand edifice, one can almost hear whispers of a bygone era. The Belcrest Apartments, a majestic presence on Cass Avenue, stand as a testament to Detroit’s architectural ingenuity. The Belcrest first opened its doors in 1926 as the Belcrest Hotel. It quickly became a symbol of luxurious living. This wasn’t just an apartment building. The Belcrest offered the amenities of a high-end hotel. Daily maid service and an in-house restaurant set it apart. The Belcrest was the brainchild of developers Jacob Singer and Max Hamburger. They envisioned a novel concept: a residential hotel for wealthy tenants. They enlisted the talents of architect Charles N. Agree to bring their vision to life. Agree’s distinctive touch is evident in the Belcrest’s unique design. The twelve-story, T-shaped structure is a marvel of concrete and steel, clad in brick and terra cotta. Notice the three projecting bays that wrap around the building’s base. They draw the eye upward, accentuating the verticality of the structure. These bays culminate in ornate gables, adding a touch of elegance. The twelfth floor boasts intricate details, with alternating bands of brick and terra cotta. The round-arched windows are framed by decorative terra cotta diaperwork. Look closely at the cornices on the third, eleventh, and top floors. These terra cotta accents emphasize the horizontal lines of the building, creating a visual balance. The second-floor cornice is a masterpiece of ornamentation, with dentils, rope molding, and acanthus leaf motifs. Even the entry foyer echoes the grandeur of the twelfth-floor gables. The original wrought iron entry gates still welcome visitors today. In 1929, the Belcrest joined the Albert Pick hotel chain. This marked a new chapter in its history. The Belcrest has witnessed nearly a century of Detroit’s evolution, standing proudly amidst the changing times. The Belcrest Apartments remain a symbol of elegance and a reminder of Detroit’s rich past.
