Did you know that Thankful Baptist Church in Philadelphia has a rich history spanning nearly a century? Right here before us stands a testament to faith resilience and community. Founded in 1923 by the late Reverend Owen J McPherson this church began with 75 devoted members. They met initially at Eighth Street and Fairmount Avenue.
The early years were marked by both growth and loss. Reverend McPherson’s passing in 1928 was a blow to the burgeoning congregation. However under the leadership of Reverend John M Myers from 1931 the church thrived. New groups formed including the Missionary Society the Pastor’s Aid Club and a vibrant Young Adult Choir. Reverend Myers’ sudden death in 1939 left a congregation of seven hundred a testament to his legacy.
The church continued its upward trajectory under Reverend Chester A Moore. In 1947 a church and parsonage were purchased at 1419-1421 West Dauphin Street. Sadly Reverend Moore passed away just a year later. Reverend Harrison J Trapp arrived in 1948. He worked tirelessly to eliminate debt. He also initiated a Homecoming Celebration Men’s Day and Joint Anniversary. Mrs Trapp started Women’s Day. The church expanded its mission work both domestically and internationally. Reverend Trapp served for 25 years as Chairman of the Baptist Foreign Mission Bureau USA.
Reverend Ivan B Hewitt became Thankful Baptist Church’s fifth pastor. He oversaw the establishment of new programs including the Sheepfold Ministry the Balcony Bible Class and an Expanded Outreach Ministry. He also oversaw necessary repairs and improvements to the church building. In 2013 he ordained six ministers three sons and three daughters of the church. He also licensed Helena Hambright and added Rev Beatrice Ross as an associate minister.
After 25 years of dedicated service Reverend Hewitt passed away in 2014. The congregation chose Reverend Gregory Ross as their sixth pastor. Reverend Ross a Philadelphia native was licensed to preach in 1999. He had previously served as a seminary intern at Thankful Baptist Church. Under his leadership the adult choirs were merged into the Unity Choir. The Praise and Worship team was also established. He initiated Unity Day a combined service celebrating Women’s Day Men’s Day and Children’s Day.
Reverend Ross also championed I-Frangelism and Thankfulism emphasizing the importance of sharing the Gospel. He worked to reactivate former church members and he blessed all children under 18 brought to the church. He also implemented the popular “Take Five” mini-sermons. The church motto taken from 1 Peter 2:9 reflects the church’s commitment to spreading the word of God. Thankful Baptist Church continues to be a beacon of faith community and service in Philadelphia. It’s a place where people truly care for one another. A living testament to the enduring power of faith and community.
