Did you know that Quan Thanh Temple stands as a testament to Hanoi’s rich history? It blends Vietnamese and Chinese mythology. This ancient temple, located on Quan Thanh Street, is a must-see for anyone exploring Hanoi.

Quan Thanh Temple dates back to 1010. It was built during the Early Ly Dynasty. The temple is dedicated to Huyen Thien Tran Vu. He is a deity that combines the Vietnamese figure An Duong Vuong and the Chinese mythical figure Chan Vo Tinh Quan.

The temple’s worship includes both Taoism and Buddhism. Over the centuries, it has been renovated seven times, with the last renovation in 1941. In 1962, Quan Thanh Temple was recognized as a national historical and cultural relic.

As you approach Quan Thanh Temple, notice the four imposing pillars at the entrance. They are adorned with Vietnamese phoenixes and unicorns. Red couplets enhance the gate’s majestic appearance. These decorations reflect the architectural style of the Nguyen Dynasty.

Inside the main hall, you’ll find a striking black bronze statue of Huyen Thien Tran Vu. It stands 3.96 meters tall and weighs 4 tons. The statue showcases the incredible bronze casting skills of 17th-century artisans.

Also take note of the intricate wood carvings. They feature sacred animals from Vietnamese mythology and symbolic plants. Pine, bamboo, chrysanthemum, and apricot are all present. These carvings depict earthly and celestial activities.

Quan Thanh Temple isn’t just a historical site. It is a center for religious and cultural activities. Locals often visit to offer incense and pray for blessings. This is especially true on the first day of each lunar month and during Lunar New Year’s Eve.

To get here, you can take bus routes 50, 45, or 22A. A short walk from the bus stop on Quan Thanh Street will bring you to the temple.

The Quan Thanh Temple welcomes visitors all year round. It is open daily from 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM. On Lunar New Year’s Eve, the temple is open all day. On the 1st and 15th of a lunar month, it opens from 6:00 AM to 8:00 PM. There is a small entry fee. It costs 10,000 VND for adults and 5,000 VND for students and children. Remember to dress modestly with shoulders and legs covered.

Quan Thanh Temple harmonizes with nature. The sounds of Tran Vu bells blend with the scenery. It adds to the ancient and poetic beauty of West Lake and Hanoi.
