Behold the Thang Long Bridge. It stands as a testament to Hanoi’s growth and resilience. Inaugurated in 1985 the Thang Long Bridge quickly became a symbol of friendship. This friendship was between Vietnam and the Soviet Union. Before its completion Hanoi relied on the Long Bien Bridge.

The Thang Long Bridge stretches 3.5 kilometers. It connects Hanoi’s city center to its northern suburbs. It was the only bridge until 2015. It leads towards the Noi Bai International Airport. The Thang Long Bridge is a steel through-truss bridge. It has an upper and lower deck. Cars and trucks use its upper deck. Trains motorcycles and bicycles travel on the lower deck. The bridge is critically important to Hanoi’s residents.

Imagine the sounds of construction echoing across the Red River. In 1974 Vietnam with support from the Soviet Union began building the Thang Long Bridge. Eleven years later the Thang Long Bridge was completed. It quickly became one of the largest structures in Southeast Asia.

The Thang Long Bridge is a dual-purpose bridge. It carries both road and rail traffic. The roadway is 3.1 kilometers long. The railway stretches 5.5 kilometers. The upper deck has four lanes for motorized traffic. Pedestrians can also use two paths. The lower deck supports two-way train traffic. It also accommodates two lanes for rudimentary vehicles.

Consider the ingenuity of Vietnamese engineers. They repurposed steel beams from this bridge. These beams were used to build the Chuong Duong Bridge. This helped ease traffic on the Long Bien Bridge. The Chuong Duong Bridge became a symbol of Vietnamese intelligence.

Picture the Thang Long Bridge undergoing major repairs. Cracks and potholes appeared. The bridge’s surface was repaired in 2009. Further repairs occurred from 2012 to 2014. However the bridge became damaged again. In 2020 the upper deck was renovated. Ultra-high-performance concrete was used. A layer of polymer concrete was added on top.

Mageba supplied six TENSA-MODULAR expansion joints. Each joint had four movement gaps. These gaps facilitate movements of up to 320 mm. The joints were tailored to match the existing steel structures.

Feel the significance of this bridge. The Thang Long Bridge connects Hanoi with northern provinces. It boosts the city’s socio-economic development. The Thang Long Bridge stands as a vital artery. It is a testament to Hanoi’s progress and determination. It connects not just places but also histories.
