Ever wondered how Phuket defended itself against invaders? The Thalang National Museum tells that story. It reveals much more about Phuket’s rich history and culture.

Before tourism transformed Phuket, Thalang and Phuket Town were the main centers. The Thalang National Museum shows the island’s cultural and societal evolution. The museum also highlights significant historical events. A monument near the entrance commemorates the tragic 2004 tsunami. The tsunami took lives and devastated the island. Artifacts salvaged from the sea are displayed nearby.

The Thalang National Museum exhibitions span various eras. They cover ancient civilizations like Dwarawati and Srivijaya. They extend to the colonial period and the era of active trade. You can see ancient weapons and traditional costumes. Farming tools and models of historic buildings are also on display. These exhibits offer insights into daily life in the past.

The Chinese diaspora’s development holds a special place in the museum. The Sino-Portuguese style room features national costumes. Furnishings, household items and photographs are displayed here. A snack bar offers traditional Peranakan dishes.

To paint a complete picture of Phuket’s people, the Thalang National Museum includes all social communities. See exhibits about the Sea Gypsies, also known as Moken or Cheo Le. Learn about the Muslims, Thai Buddhists and Chinese communities. You can read short stories about each group. You can also watch movies with English subtitles.

The Thalang National Museum commemorates the heroism of Thao Thepkasattri and Thao Srisoonthorn. They successfully defended Thalang against Burmese invaders in 1785. This victory occurred during the Rattanakosin Era. The museum was built in 1985. It marked the 200th anniversary of the Thalang War. Local historians and the Fine Arts Department collaborated on its creation.

The Thalang National Museum aims to showcase the history, archeology, art and culture of the Andaman coast. It also serves as a tourist attraction in Phuket. Princess Sirindhorn presided over the opening ceremony on March 14, 1989.

Udom Sakulpanich designed the Thalang National Museum. He incorporated southern Thai architecture. The design resembles traditional wooden Phuket houses. The building is elevated with a three-sided roof. Sanded bamboo covers the roof and walls. Woven bamboo covers the frontal triangular roof.

The Thalang National Museum also displays a large statue of the Hindu god Vishnu. It was discovered in a Phang Nga forest in the early 1900s. Dating back to the 9th century, it shows early Indian influence on Thai culture. Exhibits also cover the art, architecture and history of other Thai regions. These include the ancient Sukothai Kingdom.

The museum also features artifacts and vintage pictures from the early settlement of Chinese immigrants. Lively exhibits recreate an old-style coffee shop. Another exhibit recreates a store selling various knick-knacks.

The Thalang National Museum sits on over two hectares of land. It’s located 450 meters east of the Phuket Heroines Monument. The award-winning design reflects southern Thai architecture. This echoes the old wooden houses found in the Paklok and Bangtao areas. A visit here promises a captivating journey through Phuket’s past. It shows the diverse cultural influences that shaped the island.
