Remember this impressive building? It is the Thailändischer Tempel Wat Dhammavihara. It is a Buddhist temple in Hanover. But this temple has a unique story. It is housed in a building with a past as an inn.
Let’s step back in time. The building was constructed in 1897. Alfred Sasse designed it in the “Heimatstil” style. It was built on the Mönckeberg. This hill is 74 meters high. The building first served as an inn. It was a popular spot especially on Sundays. People came to dance and enjoy themselves. Carl Ehlers managed the inn in the 1930s. He added variety shows to the weekend entertainment. He also created a small zoo with animals. These animals came from Tierhandlung Ruhe.
During World War II the tower’s top was removed. It became a command post for the Flakbrigade XV. After the war the building had many different uses. It was a camp for Polish and Bulgarian people for one year. Later it became a home for girls. It also served as a school. It was even a refugee camp for Hungarians. From 1963 to 2004 the Autobahnpolizei used the building.
In 2007 a new chapter began. The Wat Dhammavihara Buddhist Association bought the building. This Thai Buddhist group was founded in 2003. They renovated the building. They repaired damaged parts. They installed insulated windows. The Thailändischer Tempel Wat Dhammavihara became a temple. It also serves as a meeting place.
In 2013 the association celebrated its 10th anniversary. Ninety-three monks from across Europe attended the celebration. The Thailändischer Tempel Wat Dhammavihara practices Theravada Buddhism. This is a traditional form of Buddhism.
Today the Thailändischer Tempel Wat Dhammavihara is a cultural treasure. It combines German history with Thai Buddhist traditions. Monks and nuns live here. You can visit the temple. If you register you can look behind the scenes. A monk or a nun will guide you through the house. You can see the prayer room. Monks and nuns meditate here several times a day. You can also see the dining room. You can learn about daily life in the monastery.
Three times a year the Thailändischer Tempel Wat Dhammavihara hosts big festivals. In spring there is the “Water Festival.” You can celebrate Asian New Year. In autumn the “Kathin Festival” takes place. Here Buddhist monks receive new clothing. This is a special tradition. The Thailändischer Tempel Wat Dhammavihara is more than just a temple. It is a place of community faith and cultural exchange. It shows how different cultures can come together. It enriches the city of Hanover.
