The Thai-Belgian Bridge wasn’t originally built in Bangkok. It began its life in Brussels Belgium. It stood for over 25 years before being replaced by a tunnel.
But its story doesn’t end there. Instead of being demolished the bridge was disassembled. Its 2000 tonnes of steel were shipped to Bangkok. There it was reassembled in a remarkable feat of engineering. The reassembly took less than 60 hours a testament to the skill of Thai and Belgian engineers. They worked together to complete the construction. This happened in 1988. The speed was necessary because HRH Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn planned to open the bridge. The opening was a pre-arranged royal appointment.

Baron Patrick Nothomb the Belgian ambassador played a key role. He spearheaded the effort to donate the bridge to Bangkok. A commercial attaché Cory Croymans suggested the idea. This incredible project cost almost nothing. Bangkok provided the foundation labor and pillars. Construction tycoon Chavarat Charnvirakul’s company contributed significantly.
The bridge quickly became essential to Bangkok’s infrastructure. It relieved a notorious traffic bottleneck near Lumphini Park. Its success led to the construction of more flyovers in Bangkok. The Thai-Belgian Bridge proved its worth as a solution. Even when a fire damaged the bridge in recent years its essential role was undeniable. Its closure caused immense traffic disruption.
Today the Thai-Belgian Bridge continues to serve Bangkok’s residents. It stands as a lasting tribute to international cooperation.
