“Place of coconut trees”. That’s the charming origin of Teynampet’s name. Today we find ourselves in one of Chennai’s busiest and most commercially vibrant areas. Teynampet is a central business district. It is surrounded by Gopalapuram, Mylapore, Alwarpet, Nandanam, and T. Nagar.

Teynampet boasts some of Chennai’s most expensive real estate. Anna Salai runs through Teynampet. Many important government offices and luxury hotels are located here. The Teynampet signal sees some of the city’s worst traffic during peak hours. So be prepared.

Once upon a time, this locality was full of coconut groves. Imagine the aroma. Teynampet derives its name from “Thennam pettai”. Thennam means coconut. Pettai means place.

Teynampet maintains a surprising amount of green space. In 2018, over 20 percent of the Teynampet zone was green. This is in contrast to the city’s 14.9 percent average.

Poes Garden is within Teynampet. It houses significant residences. Veda Nilayam was home to J. Jayalalithaa. Actor Rajinikanth also resides here. Jayalalithaa Illam belongs to V. K. Sasikala. Actor Dhanush also has a home here.

Gopalapuram houses the residence of M. Karunanidhi. Anna Arivalayam is in Teynampet. It serves as the headquarters for the DMK party. The PMK party headquarters are in Vannia Teynampet. Upscale hotels like Hyatt Regency and Marriott Courtyard are here. The Diocesan Church and Anna Flyover are also landmarks.

Teynampet offers many educational opportunities. Justice Basheer Ahmed Sayeed College is here. It is commonly known as SIET. Stella Maris College is another well-known women’s college. Schools include SIET Boys and Girls School. There is also DAV Girls and D.A.V Boys School in Gopalapuram. Sri Sarada Matriculation School and National Public School are nearby too.

Teynampet is a fast-growing retail hub. Prestige Polygon houses the Microsoft Corporation office. Teynampet is also served by a metro station. It lies on the Blue Line. The station serves Teynampet and T. Nagar. The station is quite large at 230 to 250 meters long. The Teynampet bus stand connects to many parts of Chennai.

Despite its prestige, Teynampet faces challenges. Residents report waterlogging and bad roads. Some lower-income areas struggle with basic amenities. But Teynampet remains a vital part of Chennai. It blends commerce, education, and history. Its coconut tree origins are still evident in its name.
