In 1720, a priest named Louis Lepage de Ste-Claire acquired the Seigniory of Terrebonne. He wasn’t just a man of the cloth. He was a builder, a visionary. He laid the foundation for what Terrebonne would become. Right here, where we stand, imagine his first church, built in 1734, a beacon of faith in the growing settlement. Then picture the first manor house rising just a year later, a symbol of the seigniory’s power and influence. Terrebonne wasn’t just a town; it was a carefully planned enterprise. Lepage even built a sawmill and a flour mill, harnessing the power of the Mille Îles River to drive the local economy. Terrebonne’s story is a tapestry woven from the threads of three distinct communities: Lachenaie, La Plaine, and Terrebonne itself. Lachenaie, the eldest, traces its origins back to 1683, founded by Lord Charles Aubert de Lachenaye. La Plaine, a relative newcomer, emerged in 1830 from portions of surrounding towns. These three communities, each with its own unique character, eventually united in 2001 under the single banner of Terrebonne. Today, Terrebonne is a bustling suburb of Montreal, a vibrant city with a population nearing 120,000. But its heart still beats with the rhythm of its past. The Île-des-Moulins stands as a testament to Terrebonne’s industrial heritage. Five buildings from this pre-industrial complex remain, whispering tales of a time when flour and lumber fueled the region’s prosperity. The Moulin-Neuf dam, rebuilt and reinforced over the centuries, still regulates the flow of the Mille Îles River. And the Saint-Louis-de-France Church, established in 1878, continues to serve the spiritual needs of the community, its Casavant organ filling the air with music. As we stand here, in the heart of modern Terrebonne, take a moment to imagine the ghosts of its past. Picture Abbot Lepage overseeing the construction of his mills. See the lords of Terrebonne and Lachenaie building the road that connected their towns. Hear the rumble of the first trains arriving in La Plaine, ushering in a new era of growth and prosperity. Terrebonne is more than just a suburb. It’s a living testament to the enduring power of history, a place where the past and present intertwine to create a unique and vibrant community.
