Did you know that Beijing Capital International Airport Terminal 3 resembles a giant dragon? It’s true. Right here before us stands the second-largest passenger terminal in the world. This magnificent structure covers a staggering 986000 square meters. That’s almost 244 acres. Think about that for a moment.

Terminal 3 is more than just a building. It’s a symbol of China’s remarkable economic growth and its preparation for the 2008 Olympics. Construction began in March 2004 and concluded in March 2008. This ambitious project transformed the airport. It was completed in a single phase a feat of engineering. The expansion included a new third runway and an underground railway link. The entire project cost a whopping $3.5 billion. Funding came from loans from the European Investment Bank and Japan.

The building itself is a marvel. Its aerodynamic roof is designed to capture thermal energy. This clever design helps warm the building in winter and reduces the need for cooling in the summer. The interior is full of Chinese colors and symbols. It reflects the country’s rich culture. The scale is truly impressive. It houses 120 gates with 66 jetways. There’s also room for remote parking bays.

But Terminal 3 is more than just a gateway to the world. It’s a shopping destination. It boasts 72 food stores and landscaped waiting areas. It has 45200 square meters of commercial space. There are also 10600 square meters devoted to duty-free shopping. The retail area occupies 12600 square meters and service areas including banks business centers and internet services take up another 7000 square meters. This vast complex also features an astonishingly efficient baggage handling system. This system cost $240 million. It’s capable of moving an incredible 19200 bags per hour at a speed of 10 meters per second. The system uses 15 kilometers of conveyor belts and 66 carousels. 200 cameras and barcoded yellow carts help monitor the luggage efficiently.

Beneath the main terminal lie two underground levels dedicated to parking. These levels offer 7000 parking spaces. Above ground are four levels dedicated to transportation services including a shuttle train connecting different parts of the terminal complex. The entire airport aims to minimize walking distances for travelers. Terminal 3 is not only functional but also a breathtaking example of sustainable design.

As you gaze up at the impressive structure remember it was designed by a joint venture of Netherlands Airport Consultants Foster + Partners and Arup. Beijing Institute of Architectural Design and Research collaborated on the project. Beijing Urban Construction Group built the terminal. Speirs and Major Associates handled the lighting design. Terminal 3 isn’t just an airport. It’s a testament to innovation and a symbol of modern China.
