Hidden within the heart of Los Angeles, the Teragram Ballroom pulses with a century of stories. Its unassuming exterior on West 7th Street belies the vibrant life that has unfolded within its walls. The Teragram Ballroom isn’t just a music venue. It’s a time capsule, a silent film house resurrected, a testament to resilience and reinvention. The Teragram Ballroom opened its doors in 1913 as the Playhouse Theatre. It entertained audiences with flickering images of Hollywood’s golden age. By the 1930s, it was known as McKinney’s Playhouse. Then it reverted back to the Playhouse Theatre. The Playhouse continued its run into the mid-1950s. After its time as a cinema, the building took on new roles. It became a print shop, echoing with the rhythmic clang of machinery. Later, the soaring arched ceilings and lighting coves, remnants of its theatrical past, witnessed the fervent prayers of the Victory Outreach church. In 2015, the Playhouse Theatre experienced a rebirth. It was transformed into the Teragram Ballroom, a music venue and restaurant. The driving force behind this revival was Michael Swier, a founder of New York’s famed Bowery Ballroom. He envisioned a space that would honor both the building’s history and the vibrant music scene of Los Angeles. The name “Teragram” itself is a tribute. It is “Margaret” spelled backward, a loving homage to Swier’s late wife. The renovation was a $3 million investment. It brought back the theater’s original grandeur while equipping it with state-of-the-art sound and lighting. Today, the Teragram Ballroom hosts a diverse range of artists. From rock legends like X to up-and-coming indie bands, its stage has seen it all. Remember the X-Mas Re-Zoomed concert in December 2021? LA legends X rocked the Teragram Ballroom with Soft Kill. Or perhaps you were here for Jakob Dylan’s performance in April 2018, raising funds for Crohn’s and Colitis research. The Teragram Ballroom is more than just bricks and mortar. It’s a living, breathing entity, constantly evolving yet always connected to its past.
