Tennessee Missionary Baptist Church

Established in the heart of Detroit, the Tennessee Missionary Baptist Church has a captivating story to tell. It all began in a humble living room. On February 11, 1956, Reverend H.N. Napoleon started a small mission at 4792 Seyburn. Soon, the mission outgrew the living room. It moved to a storefront at 3317 Gratiot on March 18, 1956. Just a week later, on March 25, 1956, Rev. Napoleon was officially ordained as Pastor. The newly formed church was christened Tennessee Missionary Baptist Church. The congregation dreamed of having their own building. This dream took root at 4844 McClellan in November 1960. The dream finally blossomed into reality on February 15, 1973. The Tennessee Missionary Baptist Church opened its doors at its current location: 2100 Fischer Street. The congregation proudly marched into their new sanctuary on March 18, 1973. This marked a significant milestone in their journey. They had moved from Gratiot to McClellan in four years, seven months, and nineteen days. The move from McClellan to Fischer took twelve years, four months, and eleven days. The Tennessee Missionary Baptist Church continued to flourish. In January 1978, they achieved another triumph. The mortgage was paid off. This joyous occasion was celebrated on March 18, 1978, during the church’s twenty-second anniversary. A cornerstone laying ceremony, led by the King David Grand Lodge, followed on June 17, 1979. Under Rev. Napoleon’s guidance, the church thrived for 45 years. He retired in 2001. Reverend Maurice Cotton and Reverend Milbrun Lester Pearson II, Rev. Napoleon’s grandson, were nominated as successors. Rev. Pearson was chosen and installed on March 25, 2001. Today, Tennessee Missionary Baptist Church continues its mission under Pastor Pearson’s leadership. They offer Sunday School at 9:00 am and Sunday Worship Service at 11:00 am. They also hold services on Tuesday evenings and Wednesday Bible Class at 6:00 pm. The church offers various ministries. These include programs for children, youth, men, and women, as well as weekly small groups. The Tennessee Missionary Baptist Church has a rich history. It’s a testament to faith, perseverance, and community.
