Curiosity led a group of Spaniards to establish the first Buddhist study center in Barcelona in 1977. This marked the beginning of Buddhism in Spain. This story, however, focuses on the Templo budista in Madrid. The Templo budista in Madrid, part of the Diamond Way lineage of Tibetan Buddhism, has a rich history intertwined with the charismatic Lama Ole Nydahl. The Madrid-Centro Diamond Way Buddhist group initially formed in 1999. Lama Ole and Hannah Nydahl first visited the group in 2001. The Templo budista, as it exists today, has evolved over time, changing locations as the community grew. Lama Ole returned to Madrid in 2003, 2007, 2010, and again in 2017, further solidifying the connection between the Templo budista and the Diamond Way lineage. While the specific location of the Templo budista may have shifted, its core purpose remains: to offer a space for Buddhist practice and teachings within the bustling city of Madrid. Today, the Templo budista stands as a testament to the growing presence of Buddhism in Spain, offering a place for both experienced practitioners and curious newcomers seeking spiritual understanding.
