A Gothic masterpiece once stood here. This is where Temple Zion once proudly displayed its spires. Temple Zion a significant part of New York City’s religious landscape. From 1854 to 1890 it was a beacon of faith. It stood at the southeast corner of Madison Avenue and East 38th Street. The building was more than just bricks and mortar. It held within its walls the history of Zion Church.

Zion Church a congregation with deep roots. It was founded way back in 1797 as a Lutheran church. It later converted to Episcopalianism in 1801. They built a church at 25 Mott Street. This was the beginning of their long and storied history. They then constructed the Gothic temple we’re discussing. This magnificent structure was built between 1853 and 1854. In that year Zion Church merged with the Episcopal Church of the Atonement. The merger marked a new chapter in its journey.

In 1890 Temple Zion’s story took another turn. The congregation united with St Timothy Protestant Episcopal Church. They moved to a new location. The old Temple Zion building was purchased by the South Reformed Dutch Church. The South Reformed Dutch Church a congregation with its own rich history dating back to 1628. They used the building until around 1911. After them the Fifth Church of Christ Scientist occupied the space. They only stayed for a short while. The old Temple Zion was then demolished. This happened in 1917. A 16-story Fraternity Clubs Building replaced it in 1924. The building stands as a testament to the changing times. It stands as a silent reminder of what once stood here.

The old Temple Zion was more than a place of worship. It was a center of community life. It witnessed countless weddings baptisms and funerals. Its bells called generations to prayer and reflection. It also bore witness to the growth of climbing plants on its walls. It sadly lost the upper part of its spire sometime between the late 19th and early 20th century.
