Could a simple dream pave the path to power? You might think not, but the Temple of Tuthmosis IV tells a different tale. This temple, sadly now largely lost to time, was a testament to Thutmosis IV, the eighth pharaoh of Egypt’s mighty 18th Dynasty. His reign, around 1400 BC, was born from a curious legend. The story goes that young Prince Thutmosis, out on a hunting expedition, rested by a colossal, sand-engulfed creature: The Great Sphinx of Giza. As the sun beat down, he drifted into slumber, a dream engulfing him. The Sphinx, that ancient embodiment of the sun god Horus, spoke. It promised Thutmosis the throne of Egypt, but in return, he must free it from the suffocating sands. Upon waking, Thutmosis took this dream to heart. He ordered the sands cleared, fulfilling his end of the bargain. As fate would have it, he did become pharaoh! While the Temple of Tuthmosis IV might not have survived the ravages of time as well as the Sphinx, its story speaks volumes. It reminds us that even in ancient Egypt, dreams held power, and fate, intertwined with ambition, could be swayed by a simple act of respect for the gods.
