Was it a prayer meeting in Mr. George Grammar’s home that sparked the creation of Temple Lutheran Church? Let’s unravel this story right here on this very spot. Temple Lutheran Church stands as a testament to the enduring power of faith. It all began on a summer day, July 31, 1901. A small group of devoted individuals, led by Reverend S.D. Daugherty, gathered for a prayer meeting in the home of Mr. Grammar. This humble gathering ignited a spark that would soon grow into a beacon of hope for the community. This marked the unofficial beginning of what would become Temple Lutheran Church. The congregation wasted no time in establishing their spiritual home. In February of the following year, they acquired a lot at 52nd and Race Streets, the very site where we stand today. Just a few short months later, on June 15, 1902, the doors of Temple Lutheran Chapel swung open, welcoming worshippers to their first service within its newly constructed walls. By the end of that year, the congregation had swelled to 100 strong, doubling in size by the following May. Driven by this remarkable growth and a shared vision, the congregation embarked on a project to erect a permanent church building on the same hallowed ground. The cornerstone was laid in November 1903. This sanctuary, a testament to their unwavering devotion, would become the heart of Temple Lutheran Church for generations to come.
