“A church built on a sacred foundation.” The Temple de Saint-Gervais, standing right before you, is not just a place of worship, it’s actually built on the remnants of a Roman sanctuary and an early Christian church, the very first of its kind in Geneva dating back to the 4th century. Beneath your feet lies a history that stretches beyond the medieval times. The current church was built in the 15th century and has witnessed a multitude of transformations. It was rebuilt entirely in 1430 to 1446, except for the crypt that held the secrets of the past. The church was adorned in beautiful frescoes, but most were painted over after the Reformation in 1536. The Protestant movement transformed the church in 1547, repurposing it for their services. It was remodelled once again in the early 20th century, returning to its medieval appearance. The Temple de Saint-Gervais is evidence of Geneva’s rich history, a testament to the city’s religious past and its evolving present.
