A synagogue steeped in history. That’s Temple Beth Shalom. It stands proudly on Highland Avenue. Sixty families founded this Reform congregation in 1955. They purchased the land for a mere $10000. A testament to their vision and community spirit.

Temple Beth Shalom wasn’t always the impressive structure we see today. It began as a single room. That space served as sanctuary social hall and classroom. Imagine the vibrant energy. The mingling of prayers studies and community gatherings in one small space. This was the heart of the congregation for many years.

The first full-time spiritual leader Rabbi Albert Yanow arrived in 1958. The first bar mitzvah Edward M Appel was celebrated in 1957. It was held at the First Parish Church in Needham. Temple Beth Shalom’s own building wouldn’t be ready until 1959.

Over the years Temple Beth Shalom expanded significantly. A new wing was added in 1965. Major renovations took place in 2005 and 2016. The building now reflects the growth of the congregation. It also demonstrates the evolution of the Reform movement itself.

The temple’s growth mirrors the growth of the Jewish population in Needham. It was the town’s first Jewish organization. Early pioneers laid the groundwork. They sought a place to practice their faith to pray and to celebrate together. They sought to give their children a Jewish education. They chose to become affiliated with the Reform movement.

Today Temple Beth Shalom boasts over 725 member families. It houses a vibrant religious school a thriving preschool and many active community groups. The Sisterhood the Brotherhood and the Beth Shalom Garden Club. All are examples of the congregation’s rich social and cultural life.
