Across the bustling streets of the Bronx, Temple Beth Abraham stands as a testament to resilience and community. Bertha Alperstein founded this sanctuary in 1920. It was a tribute to her late husband, Avraham Eliezer Alperstein. Temple Beth Abraham initially opened as the Beth Abraham Home for Incurables. The original purchase price for the property in January 1920 was $115,000. Just a few short months later, on March 21, 1920, the doors of Temple Beth Abraham opened to the community. Five years later, a new building was added. This expansion, costing $500,000, significantly increased the capacity to 225 patients. Originally a long-term care facility, Temple Beth Abraham evolved. It embraced modern rehabilitative techniques. This shift was reflected in the name change to Beth Abraham Home in 1952. This change acknowledged the advancements in rehabilitative care. It offered patients a chance to improve medically and socially. Temple Beth Abraham further expanded its reach in 1963. It formed an affiliation with Montefiore Hospital, a nearby teaching institution. This partnership enhanced the services and care provided at Temple Beth Abraham. Even in 1996, Temple Beth Abraham, then a 520-bed hospital, continued its growth. It opened new facilities in Westchester County and Manhattan, expanding its impact beyond the Bronx. This institution remains a vital part of the community. It provides compassionate care and rehabilitation services to those in need. Temple Beth Abraham has served the community for over a century. It continues to evolve and adapt to the changing needs of its patients.
