How old is this neighborhood? Well, the Teltower Vorstadt is actually the oldest suburb of Potsdam. Its story began at the end of the 17th century. It officially became a part of Potsdam in 1808. Potsdam was an “Immediatstadt,” a city directly subordinate to the ruler. This meant no industries were allowed within the city limits. So, in the 19th century, the Teltower Vorstadt became a hub for industry, stretching all the way to Nowawes, later renamed Babelsberg. Here you would have found the “Reichsbahnausbesserungswerk,” a railway repair workshop, and the silk factory “Michels & Cie.” These industries brought jobs and growth to the Teltower Vorstadt, shaping its character and leaving their mark on its history.
