“Can you imagine a time before mobile phones?” a voice crackled from the vintage telephone handset. We’re standing in front of the Telstra Museum, a treasure trove of telecommunications history. The Telstra Museum houses a remarkable collection of equipment dating back to the late 19th century. Stepping inside is like walking into a time capsule. You’ll encounter rows of antique telephones, switchboards buzzing with forgotten conversations, and the rhythmic clicking of Morse code machines. One of the museum’s highlights is its collection of working switchboards, including the “Forty Line SE50.” This marvel of early 20th-century technology allowed operators to connect up to forty calls simultaneously, a technological feat for its time. You can even try your hand at operating a vintage teleprinter, sending messages just like they did in the days of Telex. The Telstra Museum offers a captivating glimpse into how technology has shaped our communication and connected us across the globe.
