Hidden within the hills of Lakeside, California, lies the Tekakwitcha Church. It serves as a spiritual sanctuary for three distinct Native American reservations: Barona, Sycuan, and Viejas. Tekakwitcha Church, also known as Saint Kateri Tekakwitha, is a National Indian Parish. This means it ministers to all Native Americans within the Diocese of San Diego, regardless of their tribal affiliation or geographic location. The Tekakwitcha Church story began in 1982. It was established as a parish during a meeting between Bishop Leo Maher and La Salette Missionaries. The Bishop, surprised to learn these reservations lacked a designated parish, declared them one right then and there. He placed the parish under the patronage of Saint Kateri Tekakwitha, even before her canonization in 2012. The church holds mass multiple times a week across the reservations it serves. Tuesday through Friday mornings see mass held at Barona. Saturday evenings, mass is again at Barona. Sunday mornings, services begin at Barona and are then followed by mass at Viejas and finally Sycuan. If you happen to miss the 8:00 AM mass at Barona, fret not. You can catch a livestream on Father Herman Manuel’s Facebook page. The Tekakwitcha Church is more than just a building. It’s a testament to the enduring faith and resilience of the Native American communities it serves. It represents a blend of tradition and modern worship, reaching out even through social media. The church stands as a beacon of community. It fosters spiritual growth and celebrates the rich heritage of the Kumeyaay Nation and other Native Americans who call it home.
