Was once a gravel pit, Teich Britz now offers a serene escape southwest of the Buschkrug Bridge. You will find it nestled along Buschkrugallee in Berlin-Britz. The story of this pond is more interesting than you might think.

Let’s journey back a few decades. January 28 1988 marked a significant turning point for this area. Teich Britz was officially declared a protected natural monument. It gained the designation FND-07. This recognition underscored its ecological value.

Teich Britz isn’t just any body of water. It’s a testament to nature’s resilience. Once a site for gravel extraction, it has transformed into a haven for local flora and fauna.

Britz itself boasts a rich history. First documented in 1305, Britz has seen many changes. In 1920, it became part of Berlin’s Neukölln district. The area around Teich Britz evolved over time.

The pond’s transformation reflects broader changes in Britz. The construction of the Großsiedlung Britz, or large housing estate, began in 1925. This included the famous Hufeisensiedlung or Horseshoe Estate.

During the Nazi era, some residents of these estates resisted the regime. Today, Stolpersteine commemorate their bravery. Ironically, Adolf Eichmann, a key architect of the Holocaust, lived here between 1934 and 1938.

Britz continued to develop. The Britz-Buckow-Rudow housing estate emerged in the 1960s. It later became the independent district of Gropiusstadt in 2002.

Teich Britz provides a vital green space amidst urban development. The pond and its surroundings contribute to the area’s ecological balance. It offers a refuge for various species.

Britz offers many attractions. The Dorfkirche Britz, a fieldstone church from around 1250, stands as a historic landmark. Gutshof Britz, a former manor, now houses a restaurant and museum. Schloss Britz, with its Gutspark, offers a glimpse into the area’s past. The Britzer Mühle, a windmill built in 1863, adds to the neighborhood’s charm.

Parks define Britz. Britzer Garten, created for the 1985 Bundesgartenschau, remains a popular destination. Gutspark Britz has been recognized as one of Berlin’s most beautiful parks.

Even vineyards thrive here. Weingut Britz, established in 2002, carries on a 300-year tradition of local wine-making.

Teich Britz and its surroundings offer a multifaceted experience. It combines natural beauty with historical depth. As you stand here, consider the transformations this area has undergone. From gravel pit to protected natural monument, Teich Britz embodies renewal. It reflects the evolving story of Berlin-Britz.
