Did you know Tegeler Insel was once called Hundeinsel? That’s right. The name translates to Dog Island. This artificial island in the Tegeler Hafen in Berlin’s Reinickendorf district has a surprisingly rich history. It’s not just a pretty spot on the Tegeler See. Tegeler Insel boasts a fascinating past. Its creation was tied to the International Building Exhibition of 1984. The island itself is quite small. Measuring approximately 170 meters long and 60 meters wide. Tegeler Insel’s oval shape is a lovely sight from the water.
For two decades after its creation. Various plans were made for the island’s development. A leisure center a retirement home even a Chinese wellness center were all considered. Then came a more ambitious project. In 2008. A plan for eleven luxury villas each measuring 500 square meters was announced. This 40 million euro project was backed by a Moscow-based investor. Unfortunately the global financial crisis in 2008 put a stop to those plans.
But Tegeler Insel wasn’t abandoned. In 2013. A new project began. This time. Seven townhouses with 49 condominiums were built. The construction is completed now.
