“A ‘Sechser’ for passage?” The old fisherman, Siebert, grinned, holding out his calloused hand. We’re standing before the Tegeler Hafenbrücke, but imagine a time before this elegant structure, when only Siebert’s small boat ferried people across the Tegeler Fließ. This very spot, at the mouth of the Fließ, was once Siebert’s domain. He charged five pfennig, a “Sechser,” for passage, earning a tidy sum from Berliners eager to reach the bustling leisure spots across the water. The Tegeler Hafenbrücke, also known as the Sechserbrücke, carries a whisper of this past. The bridge, a marvel of steel and concrete, replaced Siebert’s humble ferry and the small wooden bridge that briefly followed. Built between 1908 and 1909, the Tegeler Hafenbrücke stretches 91 meters, a grand entrance to the newly developed Tegeler Hafen. Its construction coincided with the port and the Tegel-Friedrichsfelder Industriebahn, marking a pivotal moment in Tegel’s transformation. The bridge’s stylish southern gatehouse, complete with its charming ticket booths, wasn’t added until 1921, designed by city architect Ernst Hornig. Today, the Tegeler Hafenbrücke stands as a protected landmark, a frequent backdrop for film scenes, and a testament to Tegel’s evolution. Look closely at the bridge’s two distinct sections: the vibrant red steel truss bridge spanning the harbor entrance and the sturdy gray concrete section arching over the Tegeler Fließ. The northern end boasts two pavilion-like structures, each adorned with a narrow walkway. One of these pavilions holds a secret – a hidden staircase leading to Humboldtinsel, an exclusive access not open to the public. From the Tegeler Hafenbrücke, you can appreciate the bustling harbor activity and the tranquil flow of the Tegeler Fließ, separated from the harbor by the elongated Humboldtinsel. Looking out towards the Tegeler See, Hasselwerder Island and Reiherwerder peninsula paint a picturesque scene. In the distance, you can even glimpse the Freibad Tegelsee, a popular summertime destination. And just a short stroll from here, you can encounter the “Dicke Marie,” Berlin’s oldest tree. The Tegeler Hafenbrücke isn’t just a crossing; it’s a living story. It’s a tale of a simple ferryman, the rise of a bustling harbor, and the enduring charm of a bridge that carries more than just pedestrians across the water – it carries history.
