Here stands the Shah-Do Shamshira Mosque. Its name means “Mosque of the King of Two Swords”. It is a striking yellow building in Kabul.

The Shah-Do Shamshira Mosque sits on Andarabi Road. It is near the Kabul River and the Shah-Do Shamshira bridge. This location places it in the heart of Kabul.

Amanullah Khan built this mosque during his reign from 1919 to 1929. He took inspiration from the Ortaköy Mosque in Istanbul. The design is quite unusual for Islamic religious architecture. Its Italian decorative stucco creates an interesting effect. Some describe it as Afghan Baroque.

The Shah-Do Shamshira Mosque is next to Chin Timur Khan’s tomb. Chin Timur was a Mughal general and Babur’s cousin. He helped conquer much of India. He is famous for his role in the Battle of Khanwa. Nearby lie tombs of other Muslim commanders. They invaded India from Afghanistan. These commanders established Muslim rule. Their rule extended over northern India including modern Pakistan and Bangladesh.

Sadly, the Shah-Do Shamshira Mosque has seen tragedy. In 2015, Farkhunda Malikzada was murdered here.

But there is also hope. In June 2021, the mosque was fully renovated. This gave the Shah-Do Shamshira Mosque a fresh start.

In May 2024, violence touched the mosque again. The Afghanistan Freedom Front claimed an assassination attempt. They targeted Taliban leader Mullah Hibatullah Akhundzada during his visit. The AFF claimed the attack killed three of his guards and wounded another.

The Shah-Do Shamshira Mosque stands as a testament to Kabul’s history. It reflects both beauty and sorrow. Its walls could tell countless stories. The mosque is more than just a building. It embodies Afghanistan’s complex past. Its unusual architecture and central location make it a landmark. It stands as a reminder of faith, history, and resilience.
