Teerk Roo Ra meaning “place of many shells” in the Quandamooka language is a testament to the enduring connection between the land and its First Nations people. The Quandamooka people have deep respect for this island. They still maintain their connection to this land. Their ancestors shaped this landscape for millennia.

Before it was a conservation park Teerk Roo Ra had a complex past. John Oxley named this low-lying island Peel Island in 1824. He named it after a British statesman. From 1907 to 1959 Peel Island served a different purpose. It was a lazaret for people with leprosy. This isolation method lazaret was unique in Australia. Many of the lazaret’s buildings still stand today. Some have been carefully restored. You can see these remnants of a difficult chapter in Australian history.

Think of the lives lived here. The forced isolation the fear the hope. Then imagine the unique agile wallaby subspecies that call this island home. Seventy-four bird species eight reptiles two frogs and three mammals also share this unique ecosystem. Teerk Roo Ra is more than just land and sea. It’s a sanctuary for diverse wildlife. Sedgelands melaleuca swamps and forests cover the land. Mangroves coral reefs and seagrass beds fringe the shore. The island’s diverse habitats showcase its remarkable biodiversity.

Queensland Parks and Wildlife Service manages Teerk Roo Ra today. They work closely with the Quandamooka people. In 2007 the island became Teerk Roo Ra National Park and Conservation Park. This designation secures its future safeguarding its rich heritage.
