Dr Albert Colston envisioned the school. He wanted to train students for technical careers. His vision included math science and drafting. Students could choose college prep or industrial careers. The curriculum remained largely unchanged until 1942. That year Dr Colston retired after 20 years as principal. The school soon modernized under Principal William Pabst. He created new majors in science and engineering. These included Aeronautical Architecture Chemical Civil Electrical Industrial Design Mechanical and Structural engineering. A general college preparatory track was also added.

The school also has unusual requirements for graduation. Students need community service hours and club credits. These requirements highlight the school’s emphasis on well-rounded individuals.

The school has a rich history. It was all boys until 1970. Then it became co-educational. Many notable alumni have achieved great things. They include scientists inventors innovators CEOs and even Nobel laureates. The school’s impressive facilities include a large auditorium specialized shops a swimming pool and even a radio station. The 420-foot WNYE-FM tower atop the building was once Brooklyn’s tallest structure.
