Could this unassuming building really have witnessed some of the most dramatic events in Dublin’s history? This is the Technological University Dublin – Linenhall, a place where echoes of the past intertwine with the dynamism of the present. The Technological University Dublin – Linenhall stands on a site steeped in history, a site that once housed the grand Linen Hall of Dublin. Imagine a bustling hub of commerce, where Irish linen, renowned throughout Europe, was traded. The original Linen Hall, built in 1728, was a symbol of Ireland’s booming textile industry. However, the building we see today, now part of Technological University Dublin, tells a different story. In the tumultuous year of 1916, during the Easter Rising, the Linen Hall was commandeered by the British Army and used as a barracks. The Irish Volunteers, fighting for independence, targeted the barracks, ultimately setting it ablaze. The fire, fueled by oil and paint stored within, raged fiercely, leaving the Linen Hall a smoldering ruin. Though the original structure was lost, the legacy of the Linen Hall lives on, woven into the fabric of the Technological University Dublin – Linenhall. The remnants of the Yarn Hall, a later addition to the Linen Hall complex, can still be seen nearby, their fire-blackened arches a poignant reminder of Dublin’s fight for freedom.
