Step into the heart of Chemnitz’s intellectual life. Before us stands the Technische Universität Chemnitz Universitätsbibliothek a treasure trove of knowledge. This isn’t just any library. It’s a story woven through time.
Its roots stretch back to 1836. That year saw the founding of the library of the Royal Gewerbschule Chemnitz. Other schools followed. Their collections merged in 1878 creating the library of the Technical State Training Institutes. Think of it. Centuries of learning compressed into these walls.
For years the library resided in the main building on Schillerplatz. A room for maps and fine works. A reading room. A lending desk. A magazine. It even served as a distribution point for patent documents. Then in 1909 it expanded. New spacious rooms were built in the north wing of the building on Straße der Nationen. This served as the central library until September 2020. A significant milestone occurred in 1955. The library’s transformation into a university library began. By 1986 it was officially designated a Universitätsbibliothek.
A major shift happened on October 1 2020. The Universitätsbibliothek moved to its current location. The Alte Aktienspinnerei. This wasn’t simply a relocation. It was a consolidation. Three decentralized library locations came together. The university archive joined them. This created a central hub for research and learning.
The library boasts a rich collection. Approximately 25000 volumes of monographs dissertations and brochures are here. Also approximately 500 journal titles. Maps and graphic works complete the selection. Subjects range widely from mathematics to literature reflecting the university’s diverse disciplines. Some materials date as far back as the 15th century.Among the oldest treasures are works like Flavius Sosipater Charisius’ Ars grammatica from 1551. Georgius Agricola’s Vom Bergkwerck from 1557 also holds a place of honor. Johann Isaac Hollandus’ Curieuse und rare Chymische Operationes from 1714 represents a significant piece of early chemistry.
The library is committed to open access. This reflects a larger movement to make scholarly work widely available. The library supports this initiative through advice and publication services. Its efforts have earned it the Open Library Badge in 2017 and 2020.
The Universitätsbibliothek also operates the Universitätsverlag Chemnitz. Established in 2009 this university press supports the publication of scholarly works. It promotes open access ensuring the free availability of its publications online. In 2020 it celebrated its 300th publishing project.
In July 2021 a memorial plaque was installed. It honors Ernestine Minna Simon. A textile worker and strike leader. The plaque is located near the entrance highlighting the library’s connection to Chemnitz’s social history. The Universitätsbibliothek is more than a repository for books.
