Envision a center of technical learning. That is the Technical University of Mombasa. It stands as a beacon of knowledge. The Technical University of Mombasa is located in the coastal city. It is one of Kenya’s oldest institutions for higher learning.

In 2013, the Technical University of Mombasa achieved full university status. Mwai Kibaki, then president, awarded the charter. But the Technical University of Mombasa’s story began long before.

Let’s journey back to the late 1940s. Sir Philip Mitchell envisioned a technical school. Aga Khan III, the Sultan of Zanzibar, and Sir Bernard Reilly also contributed. Together, they established the Mombasa Institute of Muslim Education. It was also known as MIOME.

MIOME initially provided technical education. It was exclusively for Muslim students in East Africa. In May 1951, the first students enrolled. The emphasis lay on Mechanical Engineering. Electrical Engineering also featured prominently. Seamanship, Navigation, and Woodwork completed the core subjects.

1966 marked a turning point. MIOME transformed into Mombasa Technical Institute. MTI welcomed students of all backgrounds. Religion and race ceased to be barriers.

In 1976, MTI became Mombasa Polytechnic. The institution developed market-driven programs. These programs anchored on five key departments. Business Studies took its place. Electrical and Electronics Engineering were also important. Building and Civil Engineering joined the ranks. Mechanical Engineering and Applied Sciences completed the picture.

August 23, 2007, brought significant change. A legal notice elevated Mombasa Polytechnic. It became Mombasa Polytechnic University College. This was also known as MPUC.

Finally, in 2013, MPUC became the Technical University of Mombasa. The Technical University of Mombasa expanded its reach. It opened satellite campuses in Kwale and Lamu County.

Today, the Technical University of Mombasa comprises several schools. These include the School of Engineering & Technology. The School of Applied and Health Sciences is important. The School of Business is also significant. The Institute of Computing and Informatics provides valuable skills. The School of Humanities and Social Sciences broadens perspectives. The School of Medicine trains future doctors. The Institute of Research, Innovation and Extension promotes progress.

The Technical University of Mombasa also has several directorates. The Directorate of TVET focuses on technical training. The Directorate of Quality Assurance maintains standards. TUM Enterprises supports university ventures. The School of Graduate Studies fosters advanced learning.

From its humble origins as MIOME, the Technical University of Mombasa has grown. It has become a leading institution. It shapes minds and drives progress in Kenya. The Technical University of Mombasa’s journey reflects dedication. It also demonstrates a commitment to education and innovation.
