What kind of theatre would house a bank? You might be surprised to learn that the Teatro Real, right here, has a past as unique as its ornate architecture. Inaugurated in 1927 as the Real Cine Theatre, this grand dame of Cordoba was originally designed for movies, not plays. Its horseshoe-shaped hall, complete with three tiers of boxes, echoed the grandeur of traditional theatres. Imagine silent films flickering across the screen, accompanied by a live orchestra—a magical experience for Cordoba residents. However, the Teatro Real’s story took an unexpected turn. As cinema evolved, the theatre fell into disuse and was eventually transformed into a bank. The once majestic seating was ripped out, and the beautiful structure suffered years of neglect. Thankfully, the government saw its potential and reclaimed the Teatro Real in the 1990s. After extensive renovations, it reopened, once again serving as a cultural hub. The main hall, now named after Carlos Giménez, a renowned Cordoba theatre figure, seats almost 700 people. The Teatro Real stands as a testament to Cordoba’s enduring love for the arts. It’s a place where the echoes of cinematic history mingle with the excitement of live theatre, a true cultural gem of Argentina.
