Did Mauro Rota ever dream his Teatro Nazionale would become a Milanese icon? This grand theater, right here on Via Giordano Rota, has a rich history. The Teatro Nazionale opened its doors in 1924. It was the brainchild of Rota, a cinema operator with a vision. Architect Mario Borgato brought that vision to life. The inaugural performance? Sem Benelli’s dramatic poem, “La cena delle beffe”. The theater thrived in the 1920s, a hub for Italian and international talent. However, World War II brought financial hardship, forcing its conversion into a cinema. The stage went dark, but the spirit of Teatro Nazionale endured. It was reborn in 1979, reclaiming its theatrical legacy. The revival saw the return of prominent artists, even hosting Rudolf Nureyev after his exile. In 2001, under Massimo Romeo Piparo, the theater was partially renovated and briefly renamed “Ventaglio Nazionale”, focusing on musicals. A complete transformation occurred in 2009. Stage Entertainment, a Dutch company, modernized the Teatro Nazionale. This included expanding the stage tower and boosting seating capacity to 1,500. This renovation aligned with the urban renewal of Piazza Piemonte, now adorned with Aligi Sassu sculptures and a pedestrian street named after Giordano Rota, the theater’s former manager. The revitalized Teatro Nazionale, with its Broadway-style long runs, has hosted “Beauty and the Beast”, “Mamma Mia!”, “Sister Act”, “Saturday Night Fever”, and “Mary Poppins”. From dramatic poems to dazzling musicals, the Teatro Nazionale continues to captivate audiences. It stands as a testament to Rota’s vision and the enduring power of live performance.
