Picture the majestic Teatro Nacional São João. Its neoclassical elegance stands before you. A testament to Porto’s rich theatrical heritage.

This grand building isn’t just a theatre. It’s a living history book. Its story begins in 1796. An Italian architect named Vicente Mazzoneschi designed the original structure. It opened on May 13 1798 as the Teatro do Príncipe. Named for Prince Regent John VI who later became King.

The initial theatre was a marvel. Its horseshoe-shaped design offered excellent acoustics. The ceiling boasted stunning paintings by Joaquim Rafael and later Paulo Pizzi. Royal family members occupied a central box on the second floor. Sadly disaster struck on April 11 1908. A devastating fire engulfed the building. It destroyed the interior completely.

Undeterred Porto rebuilt. A competition was launched to design a new theatre. The renowned architect José Marques da Silva won. His design combined the original’s identity with elements of French theatre architecture. The new Teatro Nacional São João opened on March 7 1920 with a performance of Verdi’s Aida. The inner concert hall featured a breathtaking ceiling painted by José de Brito and Acácio Lino. Sculptural work by Henrique Araújo Moreira Diogo de Macedo and José Fernandes de Sousa Caldas adorned the entrance hall.

The theatre’s exterior is equally impressive. The main facade is framed by rustic cornerstones. It’s accented with elegant urns and garlands. Three loggias extend over balconies. They’re supported by strong consoles. The bas-reliefs on the architrave represent human passions kindness pain hatred and love. These were created by Diogo de Macedo and Sousa Caldas.

Inside the vestibule occupies the building’s entire width. From there you can access corridors leading to the audience seating. Or you can climb the stairs to the upper floors. The avant-foyer and foyer are richly decorated. The horseshoe-shaped hall seats 1328 people. Six large boxes add to the theatre’s splendor. One box served as an alternative royal box.

In 1932 a projection area was added. The theatre became a cinema called São João Cine. In 1992 the state acquired the building. It underwent extensive renovations. The Teatro Nacional de São João was reborn a symbol of Portugal’s cultural legacy. Its restoration work was completed in 1995. It included the consolidation and restoration of the exterior facades. The decorative sculptures were also recovered. New wood and iron were added.

Today the Teatro Nacional São João stands as a national monument. It continues to thrill audiences. It’s a living testament to Porto’s vibrant past. And to the enduring power of theatre.
