A hush falls. The Teatro Lirico Giorgio Gaber stands before you a testament to Milan’s rich theatrical past. This magnificent building didn’t just appear. It has a story. A history interwoven with drama intrigue and even a dash of imperial ambition.

Originally called the Teatro della Cannobiana or La Cannobiana this theatre has a fascinating past. Archduke Ferdinando son of Maria Theresa of Austria wanted two theatres for Milan. One grand the other more for the people. The grand one became the legendary Teatro alla Scala. This the Teatro Lirico was the second. Both were designed by the renowned architect Giuseppe Piermarini.

Imagine the excitement of its opening night August 21 1779. The air buzzed with anticipation. The stage was set for a performance with music by Antonio Salieri. This was quite an event for Milan.

The Teatro Lirico wasn’t always so grand. For many years it faced financial difficulties. It was the music publisher Edoardo Sonzogno who breathed new life into it. He restored the theatre renaming it the Teatro Lirico Internazionale in 1894. The theatre hosted premieres of famous operas. It became a hub for cultural events. Enrico Caruso a legendary tenor performed here.

Its history is filled with famous names. Gaetano Donizetti chose it for the premiere of L’elisir d’amore in 1832. The theatre even hosted early film screenings including the first showing of the epic film Cabiria in 1914.

Sadly a devastating fire in 1938 led to extensive reconstruction. Architect Antonio Cassi Ramelli oversaw the redesign. During World War II it even housed the Teatro alla Scala’s performances. The Teatro alla Scala was unfortunately damaged during Allied bombing raids.

Later the Teatro Lirico became a venue for the Piccolo Teatro. It hosted works by Bertolt Brecht ballet performances and concerts by renowned artists like Giorgio Gaber and Mina. The building fell into disrepair later on. After a long period of closure it reopened in 2021 following extensive renovations.

Today it stands as the Teatro Lirico Giorgio Gaber. It’s a beautiful building full of stories. A reminder of Milan’s vibrant artistic legacy. A place where history and culture come alive. Its walls whisper tales of grand operas famous singers and remarkable moments in time. This is more than a theatre. It is the heart of Milan’s theatrical soul.
